I'm sorry people, but I'm just a little tired of all these coaches, individual developers, self improvers, motivational experts ... oh, my favorite, law of attraction coaches. They greatly simplify the process improvement to a few workshops, a little journaling, some programming and ... Viola! Youre cure! People are a bit more complex than that. Certainly, improvements to be made by means of these devices, but deep seeded and long-term problems take time and effort to change. Americans are definitely in a hurry. But I'm sorry, that no one is going to learn how to play the guitar proficiently in ten weeks, quilt in a complex emotional issues overcome in thirty days.
But my question today is, why did this come about? Where did this proliferation in self-help. It is nothing new, of course. It has been around since the antiquity with the poetry of Hesiod, spells, the Stoics, and in more modern times, Benjamin Franklin, but let it be a $ 8.5 billion dollar industry. Why? My guess? We just become too damn self-involved with all our free time. Maybe instead of sitting around moaning about how much we hurt, it's time to get off the couch and start assertin '.
I must confess that I am a label for myself a success expert, but I don't and never have relied on any courses, workshops, motivational books or tapes to learn all the principles of success I've acquired and applied to my life. I only started to read the experts after the start of my business in the past year. To learn the principles, I just used my God-given intelligence and wit to get from where I now to a large extent, overcome my weaknesses and along the way always able as a computer programmer, entertainer, college educator, and entrepreneur.
Another reason I'm writing today to ask the question, do we really need all these experts? Their teachings really Work? And what we can and we must help ourselves?
Think about this, where did all successful people of the past to acquire success principles? There were certainly mentors, but there is another source that we must return to that is missing in this day and age. And there is an important element that we need in order to tap into this source: silence. It is there, we just have to overcome the distraction to get is: satellite and cable with 100 + channels, Internet (You Tube, My Space, eCRUSH, Facebook, Flickr, Tagged), online games (don't get me going into the addictive World of Warcraft) and gaming (also addictive gambling), Xbox, the (name of theatre here) 21, Blockbuster Video ... but by listening to the intuitive, the sixth sense, common sense, the divine, if you will, we will find answers and answers in abundance. You only need to shut off your devices and learning. All that noise is blocking that inner voice, so you end up going to the wrong or unnecessary external votes for improper and unnecessary information. So turn off the computer. Turn on the stereo in your home and in your car. Disabling Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation, satellit-cable-TV, DVD and CD. And listen.
All these self-indulgence. We are a country of Marine lickers. We ourselves with self-loving coos pacify and caws hope we will have the next one to the last reality show celebrity. But we have our self-indulgence, propensity for continuous and intensive entertainment overcome. Entertainment for distraction and diversity is fine, but for endless about-indulgence is where the problem occurs.
Let me try to our complacency in perspective for you, some of these may not be easy to digest, so I suggest you the child in you to sleep and let the adult rate up a bit later.
If you have a car loan from the bank and rent an apartment, you do it better than 90% of the rest of the world. If you have more than $ 3 per day, do you it's better than half of the world. If you can go off to college with finger nail lacquer on and not risk with your fingers withdrawn and then get killed, you are doing better than most women in the Middle East (a story told to me by one of my students). If you are the eldest daughter and not have to give out marriage because you have to take care of your parents until they die, then you do it better than the oldest daughters of Mexico (from another student story). If you don't worry about having your grandfather out of bed in the middle of the night and shot for the fact that absolutely nothing--made – just because he was suspected of having done something--your life good (another student of story). If you do not need to worry about starving or the shot because of political persecution or haunted halfway across your country because your father was murdered for opposing the paramilitary ...(you guessed it).
Where does this coaching phenomenon come from? it's sure to be born of a country with many safe and comfortable time on his hands. But are not considering you coaching if you are from a country where if you control your bike around a corner and smash through the door for someone's House and error lose you're looking down the barrel of a gun and the only reason that these drugs Lord hath not shot is that you act remorseful, your humility will save you.
Where did you get into all this? where are you in your understanding of not only yourself, but the world that lives and breathes around you.
Americans are spoiled. from sea to shining sea, of the largest country known to man, one where you nice sneakers, watch and rings wear can without worrying about robbed, killed or raped. Americans need to get perspective. people need to stop spending pointless loads of money for self-sustaining and about-indulging in self-serving devices.
"Getters generally don't get happiness; gevers. you give others a little of yourself a thoughtful deed, a useful idea, a word of appreciation, an elevator in a rough spot, a sense of understanding, a timely suggestion. you take something out of your mind, garnished in kindness in your heart, and put it in the spirit and the heart of the other guy."--Charles H. Burr
